It IS very sad, but two things in the video seemed strange to me:

1 - Why did the cop come in with his gun drawn?

and

2) Why did the cop seem to have pink-handled scissors in his pocket?

Why would anyone encourage another human being to take their own life? How cruel and inhumane do you have to be to egg someone on to kill themselves?

IMO, if the agitators can be found they should be charged with accessory to murder.

Hi VP,
The guns were drawn as they did not know what they would find. Sometimes people try and commit suicide by cop so they didn't know if they were walking into something where their lives might be threatened.

The scissors are the kind paramedics use, most likely these officers are crossed trained.

Your right Donna and if the Meier's case is any indication they will probably go after the agitators here as well.

Some humans are really not terribly evolved I am afraid- this reminds me of times when a jumper is on a builindg and whole crowds gather yelling and encouraging the person to jump- crowd mentality - very odd and very low.

OK. Thanks "Sovereignty".

That makes sense on both counts.

That happened a few months ago in Britian. The cops were trying to convice a teen-aged boy not to jump, and a crowd gathered and yelled for him to jump, and he did. Humans suck sometimes.

For the past 3 decades or so, it has not been unusual to see suicidal folks perched on the facades of buildings, encouraged to "jump" by members of the crowd below. Perhaps this Age of Cruelty has finally reached it's zenith when thousands of viewers watch and encourage a troubled, young man to commit suicide for 12 hours. It's an age that seemed to start with Reagan and the advent of gangsta rap (both symptoms, not causes). The Neocons have epitomized it. There have always been periods of time throughout history when human life becomes cheaper and cruelty is considered an normal and desirable trait. I hope that these new excesses finally herald the end of it's run, for the time being at least.

Working in health care, we are taught to take all threats of suicide seriously. Anyone making such threats needs to be checked out. If even one compassionate person had alerted the police early on, perhaps this man would still be alive.

I once worked an internship in an outpatient psychiatric facility. One of the patients was a young woman who had threatened suicide for years. My job, on a day trip, was to stay one-to-one with her. We were on a ferry and of course, she wanted to "go outside". I wouldn't let her and I'm glad that I didn't. A year later, I heard from someone who had worked at the facility, that the woman had finally succeeded in killing herself by slitting her wrists while at home.

Of course if you call a "wellness check" in on someone who you think is suicidal, they may well be furious and never speak to you again.

This has happened to both myself and to a friend of mine, so I'm guessing that it's common.

But really, you have no choice.

Anyone making active threats to kill themselves needs to have the police intervene and take them to the hospital. I think that a lot of people feel that the person is just "looking for attention" and not serious but you can't second guess their motives; let a psychiatrist make that call.

why would you want to see this? Its like people who HAVE to watch a bad car crash to see the gore- though there is no gore in thise the subject is morbid - why do people want to be voyeurs to such stuff? This is not the fake reality tv crap - this is reality. It is sad - and that people WANT to see this is really sad as well. Can't you just pray for him and his family - all I saw was a still in an article and THAT was toomuch as far as I was concerned. I don't know- I just have a hard time understanding that so many people are interested in viewing this tragedy. But, that is just me- and I know I am not the beginnning and end of understanding - it just makes me feel sad that so many of us feel compelled to watch it- isn't there something else we could do in life that would contribute to bringing relief or happiness into our lives instead of dwelling on the horros??? Anything? I think there are many things all of us could do- smile at strangers on the street - say hit to them just because- kindness is contagious - lets try that - it will make us feel good - forget the video- remember the teen and his soul and forget the video. Whadda ya think????? ;-)))
