A quick search of the internet revels that Barack Obama is the first to receive a negative Secret Service code name. "Renegade" 1. traitor: somebody who abandons previously held beliefs or loyalties Maybe the White House Communications Agency which selects the names got advice from Sarah Palin's speech writers.

Please share the "source" of this story. White House Communications Agency is a military unit, and they have denied, on the record, that they come up with these names.
It appears someone in the US Secret Service comes up with the names, and they are now just a tradition since the communications are most-likely secure.
I seriously doubt the folks who support white house communications are allowed to nickname the POTUS, his family and the VP.
