I guess and increase in prices is offset by a decrease in sales.

John Cook, Central Appraisal officials, land speculators, builders have all scammed the whole real estate market in El Paso. How much have home evaluations increased since Cook took over?? How many hundreds of dollars has "your" house payment increased since Cook took over?? Has the value of your 15 year old home been jacked up so high by Central Appraisal, that its impossible for you to sell, because they can buy newer houses, CHEAPER?? They keep saying "it's for the troops that are coming". Well look around. On base they are building thousands of new homes and barracks for the troops. So the "troops ain't coming" to a new $200,000 plus house in El Paso. Can't afford that price. Real estate market just one big scam.

Too true and well said. We in the military don't get THAT great of a housing allowance. I'm coming out of pocket nearly $500 a month just to pay the mortgage payment and taxes. Our housing allowance, or BAH, is designed to help pay for rent / mortgage as well as the utility bills. That's simply not the case here in El Paso because of the inflated prices for both houses and apartments. Not to mention that most of us were sent here on orders, and don't want to buy houses because we're ALL looking for the first assignment away from here.

It's a matter of getting people to face reality though. We have several houses on our street for sale. One of our neighbors finally took their for sale sign down. They're having a hard time affording their house because of the poor economy. However, they're not willing to sell it for less than $220k. It's only about 1900 sq. ft. Our house was quite a bit cheaper than that, and it's 2700 sq. ft. They're typical home sellers right now, refusing to believe that house prices have diminished due to the poor economy. That and the influx of new houses that are STILL being built, despite how hard houses have become to sell.

Don't know what part of town you live, but up Northeast, new houses still being built and then you have entire streets with new houses, grown up in weeds and unsold. Other streets completely filled with new houses and only couple sold. But then Central Appraisal tells you "the reason YOUR house is valued so high, is that the RECENT sells in your area, were houses valued at $$$$$$$$$$ So okay, what the hell does the selling price of a new house have to do with the price of my house thats more than 15 years old. Whats makes all this worse is that NOBODY is going to pay me this VALUE for my house, when they can buy a NEW house for the same or even less. Since Cook and Wilson came to power, the CAD evaulation has more than doubled the purchase price. House payment has gone up by $200 per month. Personally always thought was a mistake to buy house while in military. You are in one place for a year or two, then you move. Too much hassle to go thru all that. Much easier life to just rent house or apartment, better still Government housing. But I am sure that a lot, most of this "the troops is a coming, we got to do this....", is just another "military town" scam to rip off our troops. El Paso, case in point.

I love Dan Olivas' quote " we're insulated from the national economy"...which basically means EP is a crap hole with no major national employers of any significance and that most people earn crappy salaries as call center workers, truck drivers and fast food slaves.

You're exactly right. Many have been warning of this over the past year and we got cheerleader words from that "Mark B guy." You remember: "The troops are coming! El Paso is going t be the best! New jobs!"

There will be no new jobs in ELP. New jobs means job creation. The Army is bringing jobs with it and those jobs are filled by current government employees or contractors. Those are the same people that will fill those jobs.

Not to say there won't be new money in ELP because those employees will bring families, vehicles, pets, mouths, etc, etc.

Well thats partly true (the way I see it) and some of the civilians will actually buy houses, they make the money to do that. But the big scam is that all this "real estate" is being built for the "huge influx" of troops, ripe for the picking . Anybody seen the prices on these houses??? "Private snuffy" cannot afford a $140,000-250,000 house , neither can most Sergeants. Besides, all categories of quarters are being built on base, barracks, homes, everything. And thats a good thing, because then OUR troops will not be at the mercy of all the vultures in El Paso. The other thing thats misleading by the local politicos is the "Soldiers is a comin", but the majority will not be buying all these houses and paying property taxes. And MOST of what they need or use is on base at better prices. Gas station, groceries, beer, liquor store; etc. But yes, they do eat at restaurants, buy cars, trucks, clothes;etc. But again, this "military build up" will do almost nothing for the outrageous property tax screwing that WE get. Our one and only hope is to vote John Cook and MOST of the Council out of office in May next year.
