Outlet mall opens in Deer Park

The look of the new Tanger mall in Deer Park was inspired by Italian villas. Beyond the black top and the Stop & Shop, Italian villas and European seaside towns are the inspiration for a reality starkly ...

The Tanger in Riverhead will be a ghost town in 18 months, the Koreans are not going to drive that far if they don't have to.

Just what LI needs- more people from Bushwick Brooklyn coming here. This is why developers can't be trusted. Next thing they will be building housing projects here.

it is truly amazing how local officials and big business increasingly screw over the residents. Of all places for this massively wasteful shopping district, the most congested, beat up area of Deer Park. Deer Park Avenue is already a parking lot at times in the day.

I moved out of state just as they all agreed to build this place. I come here and ask my family how it is impacting the area. It will be horrible. The shoppers will have to share the road with all those people who work (including big trucks coming in and out of there). Its bad enough without Tanger.

There is just so many goddamn people! Plus with a looming recession, good luck Mr.Tanger. I'm pissed about living in Deer Park for 30 years and now they'll have a massive movie theater with an IMAX!

This story says, "Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone noted that it also plays a significant role in the taxes that Town of Babylon residents pay. The Arches developers received a package of tax incentives, which includes a 60 percent cut in property taxes upon the mall's opening, to be gradually phased into full taxation after 10 years. But even with these incentives, the mall should bring more than $10 million in additional tax revenue, Bellone said."

And yet in Newsday-October 2nd, Bellone is quoted as saying,

"Revenues have essentially fallen off a cliff," said Babylon Supervisor Steven Bellone, who has proposed a 9.4 percent tax increase. Babylon plans to save $130,000 a year by freezing administrative salaries and $350,000 a year by not filling vacant positions, he said.

So Tanger is expected to bring in an additional 10 million in tax revenue and Belloney is still proposing a 9.4% property tax increase? Something sounds fishy to me. And the only thing he could come up with is to save $130,000 by freezing administrator's salaries and another $350,000 by not filling vacant positions.(A drop in the bucket)

So what does he plan to do with the 10 million from Tanger revenues plus the almost 1/2 million from the town salary savings?

Babylon residents were supposed to benefit from this "under the table deal" that was made four years ago. He promised the residents of Deer Park that this would be a trade off in exchange for tax benefits. Deer Park residents: if your property taxes are raised 9.4%, who will you vote for when Bellone is up for re-election? Sounds like we've been s-c-r-e-w-e-d!

What Happened to the movie theater that was suppose to be built at Tanger Riverhead? Tanger Riverhead once had a large Christmas tree in the parking lot of Tanger 2, I think it was decorated at most Two seasons it is not there now. Years ago the Girl Scouts use to come and Christmas Carol at Tanger Riverhead, in recent years nothing. Tanger Riverhead showed Tanger corporate where the shoppers are coming from, 70% Nassau county on into the city. Only 30% of Riverhead Tanger shoppers come from Suffolk County, most of those are Western Suffolk. Tanger could care less about the employees and Managers in Riverhead. Tanger is in it for the share holders of Tanger Corporate. If Tanger Riverhead starts to fail the would have no problem converting some if not all of it into condos!!!

I am happy to have someplace other than the Smithaven Mall to shop! Tanger in Riverhead is a pain in the neck to get from store to store - poor planning there. The Deer Park outlets look so much easier to navigate. There is a movie theater and supposedly there will be an ice skating rink this winter. Not a huge fan of outlet shopping but our Long Island Malls are so outdated and run down that the DP Outlets will be a nice option for Christmas shopping this year.

Under the table deal is right? Every politician -both democrat and republican-in local, town, county gov't backed the figurehead Owen Johnson. The Democrats would not back the democrat who was against the project and lived in the town for 30 years. He just wanted to know exactly what the benfits were for local residents. I have still never heard Mr Bellone say exactly how much less in taxes his constituents can expect to pay on average individually for having to deal with this albatross/boondoggle!!!
Did Mr Bellone/Owen Johnson hold out on the developers for even a second.
If you want to build this hurricane of traffic and loss of community you should maybe at least have got the developers to:
1. Raise the LIRR Main Line tracks at Commack Rd. that run right along side Tanger and next to one of the entrances to avoid exacerbating an already over-congested, dangerous area on a daily basis before Tanger or the Walmart and all the other places even open.
2. put in an access road from Sagtikos Pkwy - which runs along parts of Tanger property
3. Place plants and flowers in the dividers on Deer Park Ave. Just 2-3 years after they were redone with red brick at great expense and traffic delays
Yup...#3!
Yes, the politicians got schrubery for the local residents! Great representation!! That is what they got above the table...for the people. If that was all, they must have all gotten alot "under the table" from Tanger and the developers.

Have fun getting there! The roads are going to be a mess... they already are. They think the answer to controlling the traffic is by adding traffic lights every 200 feet. Beautiful new paved roads surrounding the immediate area. But just watch out for all the potholes and rough patches as you come from any direction! Add to this the extra traffic and trucks that clog the roads from the factories in the area. Oh yeah and pray that the train is not coming when you are on Commack road. Somtimes you sit there so long that it pays to turn around and change your route!!!

The solution? Stay home and order online. Saves gas that we can't afford anyway.
