It's better to do something with the vacant Farah building than to do nothing. Simon Properties, of course, wants no competition. That's understandable. The City can approve the tax rebates at a lower level (if it wants to) and lose nothing in the process. Eighteen million over ten years is not a lot to pay for a development which will boost economic development substantially. If the Cielo Vista residents have no objections, I won't mind having a very, very small shortfall in the City budget because of this. When all the numbers are added up, it should, at worst, be a wash, and at best, a revenue-boosting enterprise. Good luck with this - you're going to need it.

It is great to hear you poor whiners crying over the success of Mr. Foster. This man went from practically nothing to a billionaire because he is smart, successful, and yes, honest. Good for him! That is the American Dream! Unless you are a democrat... Look at what he is doing for El Paso. How can you honestly knock the guy? The Farah property needs cleaned up and re-developed. He is willing to do so. Tax incentives are given all the time for situations like this all over the country. This is not Mexico... No matter how much they want it to be.
And who cares if he made an investment in New York Real Estate!!?? How do you think "rich" people get, and keep their wealth? By investing! Poor, unsuccessful whiners looking for government handouts are the ones who have a problem with this issue. Which is kind of ironic really... Can't live without your government handouts, but can't stand to watch someone else get some?

If the luxury mall is such a good investment, why does Fosterneed $12 Million dollar tax break ??? Maybe to pay for the $24 Million condo he just bought next to the Time-Warner Building in New York ??

How much money is the city making now on taxes from that building? How much will it make after the tax break incentive expires. Do the math. This Foster plan is great for El Paso. Our city and county government is dumb. Just look what they did to Western Playland, now better than ever. If I were to bring business to the El Paso Area, I would go to Sunland Park myself. Hell the casino was paid off in just 5 years.

I'm all for more industry. Bring it on! But keep it here in El Paso and not lining the bags of greedy industrial owners by taking the business to Shri Lanka or Juarez. I'de rather a Lama bootery or mall than Asarco.

How much will El Paso profit from this, especially with a 10 year tax break ?? Foster is , as you say, a 'greedy industrial owner'

You can't rebut the arguments against the Tax Payer handout to Foster !! Where were the tax breaks for Farah jeans, before they exported the jobs to Juarez ?? Foster deserves no special treatment from Cook because he donated money to Tech. Capitalist Tax Payers revolt; you are the welfare bum in favor of a hand-out. Melvin the MOron !!!

just because Mr Foster has given donations to El Paso ( USUALLY A TAX WRITE OFF FOR A BILLIONAIRE LIKE HIM!) does not mean he can run the city the way he wants to and have all the City officials/reps in his pocket!

Yes it does,
It may be a tax writeoff but the money he gave texh (For el paso) for exceeds the tax savings he has for this old building. Plus in 10 years, we will be getting taxes from this building, what are we getting now? Look at the future. Now go and cash those lonestars.

So True !! Cook is dumb, and has an IQ of about 47. Any business deal he negotiates is very suspect, and not good for the city of El Paso.

You are the type of person who will not listen to reason no matter how clear. I am not going to try to discuss with you how small this seemingly huge tax incentive really is in the big picture. You do not have enough education to understand. As I mentioned before, tax incentive deals like this are given ALL THE TIME, all over the country. One example... The Domain in Austin, TX. Who was the developer? Simon Properties... the same group who is protesting the tax incentives here because they were not successful in their pursuit to purchase the Farah site. Here is a quote from a news source concerning the tax incentives to Simon on the Domain project: "Under the deal, the Domain will receive 25-percent of its property tax for 20 years. The project will also get back 80-percent of its sales tax revenue for the first five years and 60-percent of its sales tax back for years six through fifteen. Over the 20 years, the amount could total more than $50 million". I don't hear Simon complaining about getting that incentive.$50 million. Again, try to remember the BIG PICTURE. I know that is hard when all you can look forward to is selling your food stamps to buy booze, but the tax incentives going to Mr. Foster are minuscule compared to the boost his development will give to El Paso. The incentive and the development will be a good thing for this city.

I'm all for this project if it is done right. Not some 'ol second tier development, this sits off of I-10 so it needs to be done nice and attractive. TOP RETAILERS with TOP RESTAURANTS!!!! It's all fine and dandy that EP is known for local restaurants and it's good local flavor, but c'mon now we need national eateries i.e., Benihanas, Mortons steakhouse damn even a Dave and Busters would be nice..... I know you can do it EP, just look at the big picture!!!!!!!!
